16U ‘Battle of the Burgh’ Tournament Recap
The Phantoms girls played in the Battle of the Burgh this weekend and despite the heat managed to post a 3-1 record in pool play that would earn them the number 2 seed in their Q bracket and a 3-1 record in the championship round. The girls made it to the semi-final with convincing victories over the Lady Firebirds and two number one seeds Renegades and Tri-City Thunder.
Game one of pool play matched the girls up with Gahanna Lady Lions from Boardman, Oh. where they out hit the Lions 12-3 and posted a 8-3 victory. Kelly went 3-3, Bailey and Lindsey 2 hits each, Jaila, Claire and Micaela 1 hit and doubles by Holly and Caroline. In game 2 the girls played Power-Becker and took a 3-1 lead into the 4th where the Power would tie it and then pull ahead in the 5th and add to their lead in the 6 which would hand the girls their only loss in pool play 7-3. Out hit 9-6. Collecting those hits were Micaela single, double, Bailey 2, Melissa and Jaila 1 each. Game 3 versus Rochester(NY)Blue Thunder was a battle with the teams tied at 2 going into the top of the 5th inning and Rochester breaking through with 2 runs to take a 4-2 lead. In bottom of the inning the Phantoms would break it wide open scoring 4 runs on 5 hits to make it 6-4 and hold on for the win. The girls out hit the Thunder 11-7 with hits from Caroline, Kelly, Claire, Melissa, Jaila double, Holly and Micaela single, double, and Mandi 2 hits. Game 4 versus LH Lightning the girls were down 2-1 entering the 3rd where they scored 2 to pull ahead 3-2 and stayed ahead for the rest of this game scoring 3 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th for a 8-2 win. The Phantoms out hit the Lightning in this one 10-9 with hits from Madi, Caroline, Kelly, Jaila, Claire, 2 singles by Lindsey, double by Micaela and 2 doubles by Melissa. In the championship round game 1 against the Lady Firebirds the Phantoms would take the lead 2-1 in the 2nd and never look back enroute to a 5-2 win out hitting the Firebirds 11-8. Collecting hits for the game were Bailey, Holly, Caroline, and Melissa. 2 singles from Lindsey, Claire would go 3-3 and Jaila would single and hit a in the park home run. In championship round game 2 versus the U bracket number 1 seeded Renegades it looked like the day was going to end early. The girls were down 7-2 going into the bottom of the 5th when suddenly the momentum would swing in the Phantoms favor. The girls would score 5 runs to tie the score at 7. Bailey’s double got things started, Melissa walked, Mandi and Lindsey reached on errors scoring Bailey and Melissa. Caroline would hit a 2 run Triple and Kelly would hit a 1 run single. The Phantoms held the Renegades in the 6th and came up to bat needing at least 1 to pull ahead. Claire singled, Micaela singled and Holly walked. With bases loaded and 1 out Melissa singled in 2 go ahead runs and Mandi added another with her sac fly deep to center to score Holly. Lindsey came up with 2 minutes to play, 2 outs and battled with a 1-2 count fouling off at least 5 pitches when time ran out for the Renegades and the Phantoms would win 10-7 to advance to the quarter final game. Quarter Final versus S bracket number 1 seeded Tri-City Thunder was just as exciting with all the scoring done after 3 innings. Thunder jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st with the Phantoms matching it and then some plating 5 runs on 5 hits and an error, chasing the Thunder starting pitcher and taking a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd the Phantoms would score 4 more runs to increase their lead 9-3 with another 5 hits and a walk which would chase another Thunder pitcher from the game. Leading 9-3 after 2 complete innings the Thunder would score 3 in the 3rd but that was all they could manage as the Phantoms were solid in every aspect of this game and came away with a 9-6 victory and a trip to the Semi-final to face the number 1 seed from our Q bracket and the only team to defeat the girls this weekend, Power-Becker. With the rematch set it just wasn’t meant to be. The Power would overpower our Phantoms and move on to the final where they would be the eventual 16U Champs. Great weekend for the girls though especially with the bats hitting 58 singles 14 doubles 1 triple and 1 homerun over the 8 game span averaging 9.25 hits per game and a 6-2 record. WELL DONE!!!

16U PA State Championship
The 16u Phantoms played in the PA State Championship this weekend at Cranberry Twp and remained competitive but still not meeting our expectations. After a 1-1/4 hour rain delay the girls dropped the Friday night opener to the Roadrunners 8-0 only managing 3 total hits in the game, 1 each by Caroline, Kelly, and Jaila. Game 2 of pool play didnt get any better losing 9-1 to Warrington Blue Thunder. Game 3 started the double elimination rounds and matched us up with the Renegades where we took a slim 1-0 lead into the bottom of the second and saw the Renegades tie it at 1. Phantoms pulled ahead 2-1 on a solo homerun by Kelly. With the Phantoms still holding on to a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 4th the Renegades managed to score 2 runs on 2 hits and an error and retire the final 9 batters to give them the win and drop the Phantoms to 0-1 in double elim. With the Phantoms still searching for their bats and needing a win to move on the girls pulled a convincing 11-2 win in 5 innings over LH Lightning. With 10 hits in the game they finally found their bats. With 2 hits each from Claire, Jaila, Micaela, and Kelly. 1 each from Caroline and Lindsey. Still alive for an exciting game 5 matchup against the Silver Creek Starz the hits kept rolling. The lead in this game changed 6 times in the extended 8 inning game. With the girls holding a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 4th the Starz would score 5 runs on 2 hits and 3 costly errors. The Phantoms tied it in the top of the 5th only to go down again in the bottom half of the inning 7-6. To the top of the 7th we go. Phantoms would score 4 more to go up 10-7. Bottom of 7 we were unable to hold the lead allowing the Starz to tie the game in regulation on 4 hits and a sac fly. We started the international tie breaker with a runner on second and would score that run on consecutive ground outs by Micaela and Claire but that was all we could manage. With the Starz final at bat they would score 2 and send the Phantoms home from this tournament. The Phantoms out hit the Starz in this game 17-10 but lost on the error slate. Rage in the Valley Tournament
The 16U team played their 1st tournament this past weekend. The competition was great with strong teams in both sides of the bracket. But not up to expectations yet.The girls dropped the opener friday night to a very strong Valley Extreme team but came back for a 2-1 win over the Lady Pirates on Saturday morning with a great pitching performance by Kelly Mazzei and Bailey Libitzer hitting in both runs. Game 3 matched our girls against (team canada) Bramlea Slam where they managed to keep the score close down 3-1 entering the 6th inning. A deep fly ball to left fielder Bailey Libitzer broke it open when she had a collision with the fence on the chase. The ump ruled it a homer and Bailey saying it went UNDER the fence. Game 4 and 5, well we just won’t talk about. Game 6 pitted us against Washington Wildfire and down 2-1 going into the 4th inning when Holly Penn hit a 1 out single stole 2nd and 3rd and was plated by Kaitlin Gronski’s 2 out single to tie the score at 2 all. Holly Penn was 3 for 3 in the game with 2 singles and a double but the Wildfire came back with 2 runs in the 5th to go up 4-2 and held off a late surge by our Phantoms. In the final game of this tournament we played Valley Rage again down 2-1 in the 3rd Madi Pityk had a 1 out single and scored on Bailey Libitzer’s hit to tie it at 2. This game went back n forth. Phantoms took the lead in the 5th 4-2 with Kelly Mazzei belting a 1 out double and reaching 3rd on a throwing error then scoring when Claire Fisher bunted on safely. Claire was advanced to 2nd by Holly Penn and scored on another throwing error to 1st on Kate Gronski’s bunt. Rage tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the 5th. Phantoms regained the lead 5-4 into the 6th added another run in the top of the 7th to make it 6-4 but could not close it out as Rage loaded the bases with the help of an infield error 2 walks and a walk off hit that plated the final 3 runs. 7-6 loss. On the positive side the girls turned 3 double plays and averaged 2K’s per game for the weekend. We will lose 1 player, Morgan Mathews for an indefinite period with an upper body injury. We all wish her a speedy recovery. We will get 2 players returning to the lineup for this tournament and will be looking to improve and stay competitive.
